What does PTY mean?
Three letters from an airport that ended up meaning an entire country. Here's where they come from — and why you'll see them everywhere in Panama.
PTY is the IATA code for Tocumen International Airport, Panama's main airport, about 24 km (15 miles) from downtown Panama City. It's what you see on your ticket and on your baggage tag.
But in Panama, PTY means a good deal more: people use it every day as shorthand for Panama City, and often for the country itself.
Where «PTY» comes from
Three-letter IATA codes are assigned based on the city an airport serves, not the airport's own name. That's why Tocumen isn't «TOC»: PTY comes from Panama City, squeezed into three letters.
Same logic behind Heathrow being LHR (London Heathrow) instead of «HEA». The city wins.
Tocumen opened in 1947 and today it's Central America's big connecting hub — the airport that links North and South America. That's why so many people recognise the letters PTY without ever having set foot in the city. Hence the nickname: the Hub of the Americas.
PTY and MPTO: why one airport has two codes

In ICAO codes the letters aren't arbitrary: the leading M covers Central America and Mexico, and P stands for Panama. As a passenger, PTY is all you need.
When PTY stops being an airport
Here's the part that isn't on Wikipedia. Officially, Panama's country code is PA(or PAN in the three-letter ISO version). PTY doesn't designate the country in any official registry.
And yet, scroll through Panamanian Instagram and you'll find #PTYon photos of the old town, on restaurant accounts, on t-shirts and in business names. The diaspora uses it to mean «back home». Locals use it as shorthand for Panama City.
It's the same thing that turned «NYC» into a cultural brand far beyond New York. An administrative code that people adopted because it sounds good and fits in a hashtag.

Watch this one: if you land at PTY with an onward domestic flight, it most likely departs from Albrook (PAC), across town. Budget 30-45 minutes by car between the two airports, more in rush hour.
